Silence is Compliance
You don't have to go through with the AI filtering if you don't want.
I am noticing more and more organizations are using AI filtering/screening of candidates.
I can only imagine how many candidates are going thru with this for no other reason than they think they have no other option, no other choice.
If you need to hear it from me: You do have a choice. You can say no.
False negatives are the hidden cost of automation.
If you don't say no, this will become more commonplace. You teach people how you want to be treated by what you tolerate.
You don't have to tolerate this. You are better than that.
People think: "if I say no, they will just find someone else..."
Sure, they may very well find someone else who is willing to go thru the screening process.
The question is: Will they be of higher or lower caliber?
Think about what it takes to put up an AI filter. What are you filtering? Low caliber talent?
You are not low caliber. You are worth more than that.
If they cannot find talent to fulfill their requests -- who will work for the company? How will they produce their widget?
At some point, the hiring manager will have to realize what the market has to offer.
If enough people refuse to undergo this AI screening, the result will be a bunch of money dumped into yet another idea that doesn't actually save dollars.
If enough high caliber people say No -- they got to get the message at some point, right?
Just as you can't buy happiness, you can't buy loyalty, and you can't buy trust. You definitely can't buy real human relationships. If you do, it's not a relationship, it's a contract.
I think of it this way: If you don't have the human capital to talk to my face (even if virtual) and have a conversation with me about the role, how do I know you will have the ability to provide the "definition of done"?? How do I know you will have good management skills or style?
I'm not opposed to leveraging AI in the right ways. I develop and provide it for my roles. However if my first impression of you is that you don't have time to speak to me directly, I'm wondering what other signals are you sending. I consider the emotional impact and signals of the tools I implement as well.
This interview process is a two-way street. You putting up an AI filter tells me everything I need to know. It sends signals that there's not a relationship to be had there.
It tells me that I'm just another number in your money-making factory.
I'm sorryNotSorry I'm not a robot. I am human, and I accept this as part of my identity to my core.
You have the power in your hands as well. You can make the decision for yourself.
There's plenty of places that still value our humanity. There's plenty of places that still value human connection.
Do you value humanity?
I know this post has a combative tone. I am not combative towards AI, I just feel strongly about using AI Filtering/Screening in the first touch point of the hiring process. I don't think its the best use of AI. A more professional tone was taken in my LinkedIn post about the same.
