Governance Systems

In today's polarizing world of politics, I often wonder if people fully grasp the policies and systems driving their opinions. Do they understand the systems and policies fully? Do they know the consequences of those policies? I will take a brave step forward and admit that I do not understand all of these things fully. I want to take it upon myself to understand them better. This post represents a step towards improving my knowledge around governance systems.

Below is a series of blanks that need to be filled in. I attempted to define what's necessary at the top so the rest could be populated. This is my personal exercise in humility when it comes to politics. I have never gone through ALL of the governance systems and really thought deeply about them to truly understand them, their consequences, seem examples of them, could review the definitions with someone. I can't argue a point one way or another if I don't have all the data and facts readily available in my head. I feel absurdly stupid trying to tell someone about something when I know no better. I think it's incredibly foolish and arrogant to say one way is better than the other especially in cases where one really does not know better!!!

If you agree with me that this is all a shytshow and want to understand things for yourself better, then I encourage you to embark upon this adventure with me. For each of the governance systems listed below, find the definitions for them. Understand how they work. Find their strengths and weaknesses. Seek out implementations of them and list examples of where and when they were used. Now that you are educated on them, what's your opinion of them and where are your sources for your opinions?

I suspect this will take some time. I don't expect this to be a quick exercise unless you are already a political scientist. Even then, I seriously doubt most politcal scientists could truly fill this out like it were the back of their hand.

Also please note: This list is non-exhaustive. If you know of other governance systems out there, please feel free to add to this list. It will add to your knowledge. I feel like truly coming to an understanding of these things and how they work is how we are going to diffuse the tension in the air because far too many are so sure of themselves when they really don't know better. I want you to forgive your past self for not knowing better and embrace the future where you are better educated and understand these complex concepts in finer detail.

Definitions and Pretext

Definition: The objective definition of what it is and/or is not.

How: How it works. What rules must be followed? How is it enforced? How does it grow/change/evolve?

Strengths: How is this beneficial? How is this helpful? What is the problem this is trying to solve?

Weakness: How is this harmful? How can you exploit this system? What's the worst-case scenario if {these} points fail?

Optional: How do you protect against these weaknesses in this kind of system?

Implementations: How do you implement this? What support structures are needed (in process or infrastructure)? What process must be followed? What is required of citizen and representative?

Examples: Can you give up to 3 examples of:

  1. A country that is using this governance structure?
  2. How are they implementing it? What does that practically look like?

Opinion: This is the space where you can place your opinion on things. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it part of some greater theory you have? Do you think it's a problem?

Sources: Please cite your sources and where you found your information. It means a lot if you found your results in well-defined and organized places of information rather than blogs on someone's opinion of how something works without some kind of backing of that piece.
